Right now our rivers are in big trouble. Beautifully and subtly illustrated, Lucy’s story gives us hope that by working together, and listening to nature’s voice we can overcome threats to our environment and restore health and abundance for us all” ~ Kevin Hague, CEO, Kaiwhakahaere Matua, Forest and Bird N.Z.

Lucy often visits the river near where she lives. Sometimes she swims in it and other times she sits and listens to the river singing its many songs. But one song is Lucy’s favourite. “Lucy, the girl who Listens” (with English and Maori text) tells the story of what Lucy hears when she listens to the river.

Learning activities are included at the end of the book.

Jacob’s questions:

Jacob (3 years old) loves “Lucy, the Girl who Listens” and wants the story read to him many times a day. Among many questions he asks are … “Why are moa extinct? Why has the water changed from blue to brown” Can I listen to the river? How did people fix it? Can I help to fix the river?

(These are the rewards for this story writer - to know children such as Jacob want answers to the questions!! :)
